Scenario for Lessons

XYZ.COM

The XQuery Basics Primer examples are built around the fictional company XYZ.COM.

XYZ.COM is an online discount merchant that distributes various wares. The company acts as a central distributor and reseller for consumer-focused retailers. XYZ.COM receives purchase orders in an EDI format from the retailers and then must process them with a variety of manufacturers to obtain the needed products.

As a virtual middle man in a business transaction, XYZ.COM likes to keep overhead cost as low as possible by maintaining the minimum inventory levels. Each purchase order XYZ.COM receives and processes requires that they verify their inventory levels, and, if necessary, issue a purchase order to the manufacturers to replenish inventory.

In addition, each manufacturer requires that middle-tier reseller vendors such as XYZ.COM, present purchase orders in a standard XML format and use their Web Services to place each purchase order.

The need to process retail purchase orders, combined with constantly tracking its own inventory and interfacing successfully with a range of manufacturers via Web Services, presents a serious integration challenge for XYZ.COM. Throughout the XQuery Basics Primer, you'll see how XQuery can help with each of these challenges.
